Helping You Find Your Balance
Tomas Jurcik, PhD
Director and Owner of Health and Balance Counselling
I am a clinical psychologist registered with the College of British Columbia (CPBC #2158). I am the director and owner of Health and Balance Counselling in Port Moody where I consult with adult clients (16+) for individual psychotherapy and psychological assessments.
While I draw from numerous therapeutic approaches, I specialize in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and aim to develop an empathetic and solid working relationship with my clients. CBT is an evidence-based approach that has been found to be effective in treating a variety of different problems including major depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. In case you are interested, you can click on the link and learn more about some of the research supporting CBT.
However, it's not just about technique: having an effective relationship with any therapist is key to productive change. That is, agreeing on goals and having a trusting working alliance so that problems can be effectively tackled. In addition to therapy, I also provide clinical supervision services for the staff at Health and Balance Counselling. I am also available for psychological assessments (e.g., personality, career/vocational, cognitive) and work with people from diverse backgrounds.
In terms of my education and training, I hold a PhD in the area of Clinical Psychology (Concordia University, Montreal) and completed my predoctoral residency at the London Clinical Psychology Residency Consortium (London, Ontario). Additionally, I hold a Master’s and a Bachelor's degree from McGill University and the University of Western Australia, respectively. My research has been mostly in the area of culture and mental health.
Other than being in private practice, I previously held a position as Core Faculty at Adler University in Vancouver, where I taught assessment courses to graduate students. Although I am currently overseas for another academic appointment at the Higher School of Economics, I am still available for telehealth services. Interested clients can contact me by e-mail to set up an appointment via the VSee platform (free and easy to install; similar to Skype). I am also often available at my Port Moody office over the summer.
In my spare time, I enjoy travel, staying fit, listening to music, and having thought-provoking discussions with family and friends.
